Edward and Wallis Simpson
The British Royal Family is an institution so no one wants to read about scandals in that family but over the years some of the romances involving them have made the headlines. We’ll start with one of the biggest stories in the history of the monarchy – the abdication of King Edward for the women he loved – Wallis Simpson.
The story is widely known so we’ll sketch over the details. The fact that Simpson had been married previously would be a non-story today, as it is for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, but back in the 1930s the church had way more power than it does now so Prime Minister Baldwin felt compelled to tell the King that the people and its church would not accept Simpson as King. The King’s idea of a morganatic marriage in which they would marry but she would not become Queen was rejected so the King abdicated his throne to marry the women he loved.
