It is common that we take our food for granted. Many of us think a banana has always been a bright yellow half moon shaped fruit, corn has always been sweet and yellow and watermelons, well sure, everyone knows what a watermelon looks like. Or do they? All of these have evolved over time thanks to our human influence, and we have changed them into something that we believe tastes and looks better than the previous version. It is common to hear about farmer genetically modifying their crops to get a desired trait in them such as pest resistant or a more flavourful crop. Here is a look at what some of our everyday fruits and vegetables at one time used to look like.
Tomatoes
Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable, that is the question. But a far more pressing question though is what did tomatoes used to look like? They haven’t always been as juicy and glamorous as they look these days in the grocery store or farmers market. Ancient tomatoes actually were much smaller and darker taking on the appearance of a berry.
