While this might come as a surprise, your wet laundry might be spreading germs like wildfire if left in the washer for too long. It is recommended to transfer those wet items quickly to the dryer or clothes line once the cycle is finished. If it's impossible to get around to it that quickly, throw the was on for a second cycle to avoid having to deal with unnecessary bacteria. Also, if you are using a shared wash machine facility, bring along disinfectant wipes and give the drum a quick clean before throwing your clothes in. It is better to be safe than sorry.
