We’re not sure what you’ll make of this next name to avoid because it’s not that unconventional, but believe us when we say that Poppy should be avoided as a name. First names can influence the way a person is perceived by others. Do you know anyone who insists his name is “David” not “Dave” or “Matthew” not “Matt”? If so, you’ll probably understand how certain names, or abbreviations of names, carry connotations that can be unwelcome.
David Figlio, who is a professor at the NorthwesternUniversity in the USA went on the Today Show to say that “First names can influence individual self-concept and the ways in which a person is perceived by others.” He went on to say that girls with “girly” names are often treated more femininely than those without.
Poppy is an adorable name but it’s one that is hard for a girl to alter if she doesn’t like using it, or doesn’t like the way she’s perceived because of it.
