As with a police interview, you have the right to remain silent during a job interview. Of course, we’re being a bit silly because an unresponsive candidate who says “no comment” to a question won’t be employed but you don’t need to answer every question candidly. There are some questions that are not relevant to the job and need not be answered such as questions of a personal nature that we’ll touch on further. The answers could be used to discriminate so politely decline to answer those.
Interviewers shouldn’t make any reference to your marital status during the interview. This information can often be misread, especially in the case of divorcees who can be seen as unreliable.
