Some of the world’s strongest brands came to life and to prominence in very unusual ways. Focus groups and marketing companies were not around when John 'Doc' Pemberton sold his first few bottles of Coca-Cola towards the end of the 19th century. Today, we know Coke as a drink that’s enjoyed by children and adults alike. It’s sold in just about every type of shop imaginable however you couldn’t get your hands on it so readily when it was first sold.
The original Coke was marketed as an alternative to perfect morphine. It was seen as a miraculous remedy for all sorts of ailments including mental fatigue and exhaustion. Perhaps it was the drinks high cocaine content that gave it the zip its drinkers enjoyed. In the end, it was as addictive as morphine so didn’t fulfil its promise to be a safer alternative to the drug.
