Similarly to many other buildings around the world, prisons come and go depending on functionality, financial situations and location. Eventually even some of the most infamous prisons have to eventually shut down and close their cell doors permanently. Here are 7 photos of abandoned prisons that will leave you with more questions than answers.
Once you arrive at Alcatraz, there is no escaping
Located on an island off of California, Alcatraz is one of the most famous prisons in the United States. Once inmates arrive here, it is hard to imagine trying to escape, even though some did attempt to. In some of the blocks, the cells were only 5 ft by 9 ft where the average stay was 8 years. From 1934 to 1963 it imprisoned approximately 1,545 inmates and over the years 5 commited suicide, 8 were murdered by fellow inmates and 15 died from natural illnesses. Originally the guards enforced the rule in which prisoners could only talk to each other during meal and recreational periods but this was discontinued in the late 1930’s. By 1963 the combination of rising costs and deteriorating facilities forced the closure of Alcatraz and it has now become one of the top attractions in San Francisco.
