13,000 cans a day
Beer sales continued to increase over the years and in 2010, the 4 local liquor stores sold an average of 13,000 12-ounce cans of beer a day. The number of accidents was also on the rise and the Lakota Indian community started to demonstrate and protest against beer sales. At that time there was a police force of 100 agents in the region but when George W. Bush took office, he reduced the number down to 32. The “investigation” that took place was less than thorough and the tension between the Native American community and the police continued. Eventually, the bars closed which led to national press coverage.
