Back in 2007, a UNAIDS report estimated that 5.7 million South Africans were HIV positive. At that time, that number represented 12% of the 48 million citizens in SA, meaning that 18.5% of all adults at that time had the disease. Today, 10 years later the disease affects 18.9% of the population showing that basically, nothing has changed in the past decade. Now 7.1 million people live with the disease meaning that SA is the most infected nation on the planet. Each year an average of 270,000 people contract the disease and 110,000 die from it. It affects the poorest as well as the richest citizens so no wonder there are plenty of famous people suffering from the disease.
Koyo Bala is a famous face who died recently as a result of HIV/AIDS. He finally died last year. He died of anal cancer which is 40 to 80 times more prevalent in those who are HIV positive.
