Edward and Wallis Simpson
The British Royal Family isn’t known for crazy stuff but they are known for controversy over the years. We've checked out some of the craziest and most controversial scandals in British royal history, some of which are little known. Others are well documented such as the one we're starting with.
Modern readers probably can't imagine any reason why a King could not marry a divorcee but back in the mid-1930s when Christianity was not just the dominant religion but also informed the public perception of decorum, there was no way that the monarch could get hitched to a divorcee. Don't forget that the church doesn't allow divorcees to remarry in church unless they're widowed so Christianity is a religion that, like all others, has conventions that support its ideology. At the head of the Church of England, Edward was not allowed to marry Wallis Simpson but that's not where the controversy came in. The fact that he abdicated in order to wed her remains shocking to this day.
