Qian Hongyan’s story
Whether you’re aware of Qian Hongyan’s story or not, we’re sure it’ll touch you to learn that she’s doing well. The story of this extraordinary girl was first published in 2008 but it wasn’t until 2013 that British newspapers began to cover the story of this amazing girl who’s suffered through so much. The tag “Basketball girl” isn’t a slur on her at all, it’s an affectionate name that the press adopted for her when images of Qian using a basketball in place of her severed legs began to appear online.
Qian Hongyan, who was born in Yunnan, China 22 years ago, lost both her legs in a horrific accident when she was just 4 years old. Her parents are among the poorest people in China so there was no money to provide their daughter with prosthetics limbs when the accident befell her but she had to get around. She still had school to attend so something had to be done. It was her grandfather who came up with the idea of using a basketball to help her get around.
Her parents were farmers who were not making enough money to afford expensive prosthetics for their child so the grandfather’s ingenious idea was a great one. It helped her to get around, it helped alleviate the pain because of the elasticity of the ball, and it also covered up the mutilated area.
