Everyone knows that silica gel packets are designed to absorb moisture. That's why you find them in all sorts of packages, including shoeboxes and packs containing dried meats. Normally, you just throw them away, but you can keep them and use them for several things. We've found several things you can do with them, including saving your phone, preventing rust, freshening your gym bag and keeping pet food fresh.
Unless you have a water-resistant phone, this top tip will come in useful. If you drop your phone into water, silica packets can be used to save the important internals from water damage. When they're part of a product's packaging, silica packets keep moisture off the item. Silica is a gel that contains millions of tiny pores. These pores absorb and hold moisture. If you drop your phone into water, the silica gel will draw the remaining water droplets from your phone. You'll need to be patient as it'll take between 24 and 48 hours, but it's much more effective than using rice.
Razors and rust
You can prevent rust building up in your toolbox with silica gel packs. Just toss one or two into your toolkit and any excess moisture will be absorbed. It's the same story with your razor. Excess moisture will make it deteriorate. To avoid this, place silica packs near your razor. Remember to shake all the excess water off the razor before putting it away. Silica will only remove tiny moisture drops and condensation, which will make your razor last a lot longer.
After a session in the gym, everything's sweaty. You might shower at the gym and go onto work or out for the evening. If you do that, your sweaty clothes sit in your bag for hours. Silica gel removes the sweat, so bacteria have nothing to feed on. That means you won't open the bag to a nose full of odour. Put some packs into your trainers too. That's the place you'll notice the most difference.
Pet food container
You probably buy your pet food in bulk. It makes sense because you don't need to worry about storing it at a certain temperature or taking it away from strong odours or any of the other things we do to protect our food from spoiling. You have to keep pet food in airtight containers to make sure it doesn't spoil, but in humid areas moisture will get in. Tape a few silica packs to the inside of the container and your pet food will last a lot longer.
