You either love it or hate it but just about everyone's tried it at some point in their lives. Did you realise that the gooey brown mess you spread on your toast or have with cheese in a sandwich is actually good for your health? Although it's only made from four ingredients, brewer's yeast, celery, salt and spices and is fortified with minerals and vitamins, Marmite has some surprising benefits to your heart, your eyes and the even the quality of your sleep.
Helps you sleep
Marmite can help you nod off. Can you believe that? So, the next time you're up late and want to relax don't grab a cup of cocoa spread some of the black gooey stuff on toasted bread and you'll soon be asleep. That's because it contains magnesium that scientists have recently revealed can aid sleep. It does this by relaxing your nerves and your muscles which means you relax quicker and can, therefore, fall asleep pretty easily.
Great for your skin
Don't misunderstand. We're not suggesting that your mudpack becomes a Marmite pack. It's benefits to your skin don't come from spreading it anywhere. Eating Marmite provides your system with a boost of vitamin B1, B2 and B3. These vitamins break down carbs into glucose which helps keep your skin healthy.
You don't need to swallow raw eggs anymore when you're hungover. You can use Marmite instead. Alcohol intake reduces your body's ability to absorb B vitamins. This leaves you tired and moody. You probably don't need us to remind you what a hangover feels like. The good news is that if you can stomach a piece of Marmite toast or a sandwich with the stuff spread over it, your hangover will pass a little quicker. If not, try dissolving a spoonful of the stuff in hot water. If that doesn't sound tasty, (let's face it, it doesn't even sound edible) add some lime juice. What about fried onion? You could add that into the mix too if you'd like to maximise the effect.
Anyone with relatives or friends with dementia will know it's no joking matter so we're not kidding around when we say that Marmite can help increase the level of brain chemicals which help the brain fight off dementia. Studies undertaken by boffins at York University made their subjects eat a teaspoon of the stuff every day. After a 30-day period, they found that those who'd consumed Marmite every day had higher neurotransmitter GABA levels. That's the chemical that helps regulate brain activity. The study showed that the participants' GABA levels remained high for eight weeks after the study ended. The study concluded that the B12 in Marmite was responsible for the change in their subjects.
